I am not african american, however my hair is very similar to african american hair! (I am East Indian)... I want to keep my hair healthy and I know that chemically relaxing it will be damaging... however I do not have another choice! Even when I straighten it with a very good straightener that cost me about 100 bucks, I can not leave it down I always have to put it up in a ponytail because of the thickness and poofyness. Wearing it natural is a disaster. I have relaxed my hair once before but ever since then I have been experiencing hair loss. However the relaxer did help my hair and made the curls exactly how I wanted them. Basically I want to know if I should relax my hair or not?!

Yes, you can try a mild relaxer to do just that...relax your hair. It will also make it less thick and frizzy. It will work well, however be sure to go to a professional hair stylist and keep your hair moisturized. I know of Jewish women who have gotten relaxers for the same reason.

DONT USE A RELAXER.....I am african american with very long hair and the best way to straighten it is with a pressing comb it should on cost you about 60 dollars to buy one also if you just want your curls to release a liittle try putting pressing oil on it and then blow drying it

i think you should go to a salon and have your hair straighten.... try Japanese Straight Perm...it makes your hair nice and straight...if you think your hair is dry...i sugguest hot oil treatment once at the salon, and do home treatment regularly

I think you should make sure you get a kiddie perm, but make sure you take care of it. you know wash it every to weeks and get another kiddie perm every six weeks. I say this because I know. I had the same problem now my hair is longer, softer, tand a little thinner than what it used to be. u can do a relaxer but my hair used to be like that and i got a relaxer and it broke all off *tear*tear* so jus like wash you hair and keep the conditioner in for like 3 extra min wash it out and let it air dry brush it out with some grease and wrap i still have that type of hair(jus not as long) and it works perfectly for me

Relax it....but if you live in a town where you can find a dominican hair salon try to let them help my sister has your exact hair type and she goes to a domican salon, these girls know hair they get her hair asian straight with just a deep conditioner then they wrap a plastic cap on it and stick her under the dryer then they rinse it out after about 20 min and put really big curlers in her hai and put her under the dryer for 45 min then they blow dry it straight and it last her a week...good luck
