I have hair about three inches past my shoulder and I am trying to grow it longer. I straighten it a lot so the ends are kinda damaged, but I want my hair to grow much faster. I probably wont straighten it at all this summer. What can i do to speed up the hair growing process and to keep my hair healthy?
If hair grows from the roots then why does hair grow faster when the ends are trimmed ?
It doesn't make it grow faster. You trim your hair because split ends can grow upward and ruin your hair, so cutting them off stops their progress. It'll make your hair healthier by trimming often to nip split ends in the bud, so that you won't have to cut a lot of hair off later because of excess damage. There are things you can do to give the illusion of more length, but I don't think there is anything really you can do to make it grow at a faster rate.
I included a link as well that gives several steps on keeping hair healthy so that it grows at its optimum level. However, one of the steps does say not to use flat irons or other things like that, which do damage hair.

It doesn't grow any faster. it just grows more evenly and with fewer split ends.

Trimming the ends wont make your hair grow any faster. It will make it look healthier though. Regular trims will help stop any split ends from continuing to split. You will find you need less product to make it look nice as well.
If you eat right your hair will look nicer. If you want to straighten it but are worried about the damage make sure you use a heat protectant spray when you straighten it.

the hair still grows from the roots. but trimming the ends just removes the split ends and the tiny knots which are formed at the ends and the process is fastened. Straightening, though makes the hair look good, spoils the texture of hair. Your hair needs moisture. Try natural products with not too much of chemicals. Try those natural product hair masks. Diet also contributes towards hair growth and quality. Add lots of fruits and water to your diet.

That is a myth about hair growing faster when you trim it often. The best thing to do if you want it to grow is to get a lot of calcium and protein, that will not only help your hair grow, but also make it healthy and shiny. Stop straightening your hair, or at least if you are going to do it, there are special products that work with heat to repair your hair.

B/c the ends are breaking off, thus making the length look short. How old are you? b/c I'm 19 %26amp; knew that since 16!

Hi. Thats only a myth. The only reason why you trim your ends is to get rid of split ends to make your hairstyle more finished and to cut off damaged hair that might split more. You cant really avoid split ends, but moisturizing it with oil (a natural oil like Africas best herbal oil, 100% coconut oil or a mixture of essential oils is best - DONT USE MINERAL OIL OR PETROLEUM as an oil!!) or a moisturizing cream will help. The ends of your hair are the oldest and they need more care.
Another thing you should do is deep condition with heat once a week. This will ensure that your hair will be strong and well conditioned, which will help your ends too. You should also stop straigthening it. I dont really know if your ends are extremely damaged, but if they are, you might have to cut it off. Constant heat will thin your hair out. Even if you have a heat protectant, its never 100% guaranteed. I straighten my hair only for special occasions, which is like about 3 times a year, at the most. The rest of the time I am a natural.
Taking vitamins will help greatly. You could take a multivitamin like One a day, namebrand or generic, and a separate hair vitamin that has biotin in it. An example is GNC healthy hair, nails and skin. Dont get the highest dosage though. Your body could only take so much will flush the rest out, especially a waste for $30. Eat more vegetables and fruits, drink lots of water daily, and exercising will help. Your hair will thank you.

If hair grows from the roots then why does hair grow faster when the ends are trimmed ?
Scientific fact: hair absolutely DOES NOT grow any faster just because it's trimmed. Many want to believe it works, but it has no effect. You said it yourself; hair grows from the roots, not the ends. Actually, there are no methods or products short of birth control pills (which I wouldn't recommend taking for anything other than, you know, pregnancy) that work for making hair grow faster. Again, many would love to believe that something exists that will really work, but nothing does. How fast your hair is going to grow is genetic. Just have some patience, take good care of your hair, and it will grow with time.
