Hello:

Always keep your hair conditioned and moisturized. Natural hair is fragile and will break easily. I like to use natural products. It's a journey but it is not bad. Here are some site that wil DEFINATELY HELP! This is will give you a good idea on what to do. You really have to try different products and see what works for you. You will get tips from products to styles and stories about women transitioning from relaxed to natural hair.

For me I use a no-poo method. (find out more from links)

Some conditioners I use:

Suave-milk and honey/lavendar/coconut/humectant (love it)

To lightly oil my scalp I use- Jojoba oil (100%)

To keep hair moist- castor oil (a little goes a long way-my hair is very thick)

after I condition my hair I put coconut oil in it and tie it down for the night.

But you will learn more from the sites.. Good luck!

the tension from the braids DO in fact break it!!!! there is really nothing you can do about it but stop wearing braids. if i were you id let my hair and scalp rest a while and do some reconsructing to your hair shaft to help strengthen it back up. i would suggest useing a product like Brocato CLOUD 9 Miracle Repair shampoo and treatment.

braids are good for our hair because they allow the hair to "rest" from the day to day abuse we heap upon it to keep it looking good. it's not the braids that break the hair; it's how tight your hair is being pulled from your scalp that usually will result in thinning areas, especially the edges. don't get it braided too tight, don't allow your hair to be pulled too much. it's really not necessary. also, when your hair is braided, it still sheds, just like it does when it is not. some hair loss is normal. keep your hair clean and well moisturized. we shampoo our hair less frequently than our caucasian brethren because our aim is to keep moisture in our hair because it tends to be drier, whereas they need to shampoo more frequently, perhaps daily to remove excess oils that tend to weigh the hair down and make it look greasy and stringy. there is such a thing as a dry shampoo. you would use a powder to "shampoo" or clean as opposed to water and shampoo. also you can put an astringent like Seabreeze or Listerine on a cotton swab and clean the scalp. no need to spend an inordinate amount of money on styling products. you can moisturize the hair with mineral or olive oil, which is also great for moisturizing the skin. read the ingredients list on the products you use. most of them have the same basic ingredients, save for some that use more expensive fillers like scent, color, herbs, some are infused with hormones, etc. keep it simple. change up your braided style to take the tension off the areas that are breaking. give yourself or have someone else give you a good scalp massage to get the blood circulating to those areas so that it will stimulate regrowth. you should have no problem with keeping a healthy head of hair i wish you the best

Braids can cause hair damage. For tips on taking care of your hair without damaging it you might be interested in the book "Natural Black Hair." For details visit http://nwscents.com/catalog.php?item=15
