My daughter's hair is a nice medium ash brown, shiny, and soooo thin. It won't grow long either. She doesn't have any medical problems - just got shortchanged one the hair genes. We buy lots of pink clothes to avoid confusion but still she's occasionally mistaken for a boy. My hair (I'm the mom) is long and thick, her father's is fine textured and receding. Does anyone else's child have hair like this? I've had two different women make comments about her hair - wondering why we would cut it in a such a short shag, and maybe she got some scissors and did it to herself?! It's so thin I can barely keep a barette in it. I'm afraid this may start affecting her self esteem, especially when she starts school. Will it ever thicken up?
And no, I don't make this an issue with her or say anything to give her a complex about it.

Wow so many answers, first let me say, You sound like a very concerned mother, I myself have 3 and can tell you, that the hair your daughter has now will probably not be anything like the hair she is blessed with as an adult!! Oh yeah, I am also a graduate from a well respected Academy of Hair!! sounds so swank!! nah, anyway take a moment and think back over her 4 years how much her hair has changed since she came into the world. I am 40yrs old, I have thin hair, thin 2ways, the strands are thin, and I am not blessed with an abundance of hair! I have always wanted Long, Long Hair, you know down to my knees, anyway, I am one of the many "children" whose parents believed that if they cut my hair short, and kept it cut short it would grow back thick!! Ole Wives tale, but it does have a common sense quality, first, if you trim, and I mean trim, the edges of your hair, the ends will be blunt, whole, so many of us think if we don't cut our hair it will just grow so long, but most of us have ends that split or fray so while our hair is growing it is breaking off at the ends, but if you trim it every 4-6 weeks, about 1/8 of an inch you will really notice the growth and will look incredibly healthy. Back to the Ole Wives tale, I have always loved haircuts like the shag, or really layered looks, but for someone like me, some layered cuts tend to enhance my thinness--is that a word? if I keep a blunt, one length cut, my hair tends to appear thicker, and well it is thicker when it is one length, as far as the two women making comments, well unfortunately there is always someone, somewhere having to say something!! My 4year old, her hair is also thin, and unfortunately she has grabbed the scissors, her Aunt my sister is also a Hairstylist, and my 4 year old wants to be just like her, I just wish she would find another head other than her own to practice on, she really does not have much left!!

Nope--it's genetics. Invest in some cute hats for her.

probably it will thicken up when you cut it a little and let it grow and then repeat the process. also it will grow faster.

It might because when I was a kid my hair was really thin and now my hair is super thick. But it depends if your hair is thick or not and it might take a while for here hair to get thicker

A lot of times, it's the children who will one day have the thickest hair that stay "bald" the longest. I don't know why, it seems like the thick hair takes longer to manufacture! I am a stylist, and I've seen many clients come in with their daughter asking the same question. I tell them to be patient. Did your hair take a long time to develop when you were young?
My sister was bald until she was 4. She, out of the four of us, has the best hair by far.

your daughters hair will thicken up. it's takes a couple of months to get thick hair. and just try giving her nice things. it makes her smile. and you could use some thicken for hair, like some products. and if your daughter is about 12 years old or older tell her. and if she's younger than that just wait. and if she' s younger than that ask a doctor. but if she' 3 or younger you have to wait a while before it gets thick!

Some kids just have fine hair. If it's of great concern, I would consult her Dr. I know girls that were 10 and hair fine hair, but it got thicker as they got older.

You can try by applying alcohol or beer on her scalp every once or twice a week. I use to have very thin and lifeless hair when I'm like your daughter age so my mum put the beer on her hand and rub into my scalp, the beer will actually stengthen the hair structure and increase volume to the hair as well. Give it a try....

childrens hair goes through lots of stages before it becomes like adult hair, and your daughters will definately become thicker as she gets older. kids dont notice stuff like that she wont get bullied at school.

Either give her a hairband to wear so that nobody mistakes her as a boy or tell her to put lots of mustard oil in her hair on Mondays and wash it off the next Monday so gradually the hair will become thick and also long. So best of luck. Also do not let her blow dry her hair cause that makes it dry.use a shampoo that does not have much chemicals

I have very thin hair also, always had thin hair tried overeating nothing seems to do anything, they do have Chinese shampoos that say they will thicken your hair but you probably have to use it for years I use volume, plumper's everything on my hair I don't no if you would want to use products on your daughter's hair at a young age but that's the only thing that seems to work for me!!! GOOD LUCK !!
