Keeping the split ends trimmed helps your hair grow faster. So, it depends on how quickly your hair gets damaged with splits. Just watch it closely when you see the ends begin to split, trim up!

1/4 inch every six weeks

Hair grows at a rate of about 1/2-inch per month. Trimming it does not make it grow any faster because hair grows from the roots, not the ends. However, trimming split ends keeps them from splitting further and breaking off, plus it looks nicer. So, don't trim more than 1/2-inch per month. I wouldn't trim it any more often than once every 3 months. If your hair breaks easily, try using a moisturizing shampoo and conditioner (fortifying ones are good too).
