I'm Black myself %26amp; other Black people think that because I don't have a perm (relaxer) %26amp; nails decorated, then I'm crazy %26amp; not conforming to society? I wanna stay natural. I just wanna be me. Why can't I be me %26amp; have my own style?
My case manager is Black %26amp; told me today that she thinks I should get a perm-RIGHT after she chewed me out %26amp; called me irresponsible because my electricity bill was high. But it wasn't high because of the energy I used. It was because of the deposit I had to put down.
I can't get jobs by my OWN Black people because I don't have chemically straightened hair. They will not hire me. But I see other Blacks walking around with natural hair. Why do I need a perm if beauticians tell me I have healthy, good hair? Perms cost money I don't have, ESPECIALLY if done by a professional %26amp; if I were to perm it myself, I'd have no hair %26amp; that ain't healthy. Besides, I have a scalp condition.
Why do people think that I MUST get my hair fixed %26amp; nails done because I'm Black?
Hun its just plain discrimination. If you like your hair natural I say keep it that way. Please continue to keep your head up and you will find a job. Most people think all black people don't want to better themselves but its not true.Racism is alive and well. We also get it from our own people.Be encouraged.

I don't think you should conform to what society says is right. I say do what you do as long as you look nice and feel good doing it. If they wont hire you because of that then that is definitely not the job for you. Just keep your head up and keep searching.

I think that you have the type of personality that won't allow anyone to influence you to do something you don't want to do. It's a shame that we are harder on ourselves at times than our counterparts. Stay strong and true to yourself.

I don't know - why *can't* you be you and have your own style? You say that you want to be yourself and not conform, but you also seem to care a lot about everyone's opinion. This pulls you in opposite directions. You have to choose one or the other. Do you want people to be happy with you, or do you want to be happy with yourself? The good news is that once you are truly happy with your natural hair and nails, and really stick to your style without giving any recognition to the various opinions, everyone else will begin to accept you as well. But you have to manifest your contentment and really stay positive about all things, and never become inflamed by what people say or think when it comes to your style. The more you make it an issue of being black, and pointing fingers at those who want to change you, the less power you allow yourself to have to overcome the situation. (sorry, this whole answer turned out waayy too Dr. Phil)

Getting a perm can be damaging to the hair. Ask any stylist how this affects the hair shaft, etc. I feel the most important thing that you can do is feel comfortable and content with how you are to begin with.Sounds like you are and that is what matters most.Confidence in yourself goes a long way to promote yourself and have you show your potential in any job interview. Not to overdo it, not to seem too sure of one's self, that can backfire.Modesty is still needed then , but disregard what others tell you to do with your hair. It's your's and you have to wake up and have it daily, they don't. IF you have healthy hair then don't change that.
SO many others seem to do so much to their hair and don't know the damage they do when they alter what they've got.
I feel you should be glad for having good hair and not do what others tell you in that. I don't feel a perm will get a job for anyone faster or easier. Rely on your abilities to get that. Don't limit yourself to just applying to other black people too. I have mixed coworkers, we are hired on what we can do then. Rely on your skills and not ever think a perm is what you need.
